There are many ways to describe what hypnosis is and how it works.  There are also many myths about hypnosis.  To find out more, click on any of the links below to watch a number of short videos about hypnosis.  Basically hypnosis is experienced as a state in between sleep and wakefulness.  Contrary to popular belief, you neither lose consciousness or control when in this state; in fact, you can gain more control over your situation, your self and your life when hypnosis is used properly.  Hypnosis can help by increasing motivation and purpose, by gaining a different perspective on your life or by focusing your attention differently to reduce pain, to reduce anxiety and depression, or to make bodily changes.  It does this by engaging different parts of the brain that are less accessible than in the waking state. In addition, hypnosis creates change by using your imagination to create powerful images, to focus your attention to different aspects of your experience and by helping to explore unconscious processes.
